I'm a native Southern Californian who never gardened until I moved to Mineapolis, the shortest growing season in the country! Tough to be me :), while there, my garden experience was confined to a 10x10 patch surrounded by weeds in the center of a vacant lot. That was the year I grew a tomato bigger than the one that won the Minnesota State Fair competition. Yes, I measured and then gloated, so sue me %). After a few seasons of garden life in my hometown of San Diego, I am planning to plant my father a spring vegetable garden and perhaps scented florals at his remote cabin outside of Glennville, CA (an hour or so from Bakerfield). I'm certain my biggest problem and probably delight is going to be the critters who will share in the pleasuere of fresh organic vegetables. So back I come to my old stomping grounds "The Garden Web". Only this time to re-read all those pest deterent forums I used to lurk around in (just so I cold feel smug about catterpillars being my biggest problem) With a bit more serious eye! Racoons? Rabbits? Gophers? why whoever heard....?

Good grief, it's gonna happen in my patch of dirt now too! Wish me luck if you can forgive a girl for her past "free ride"!
