Ive been gardening since I was very very young. As far back as I can remember, my father at least had a container garden which is where we almost always got our fresh vegitables.
As I got older, gardening became a chore to me. It was certainly not something I ever WANTED to do. All that weeding, watering, checking for insects, composting, etc, etc, etc. Why whould anyone want to go through that much trouble just for a few fresh vegitables.
Then I bought a house and had a daughter. Suddenly, my poor neglected lawn and trees look more like a canvas and less like hopeless chores.
I think that gardening is a habit. My father aquired the habit as a child of the great depression. My irish grandparents got by mostly on the food they were able to grow themselves. They were self-sufficent, not out of idealism, but neccessity.
Two generations later, I have the gardening bug, and am loving it. My ultimate dream is to live in a self-sufficent home of my own design, surrounded by an environment that enriches both my body and my soul.
