Ive gardened since my family moved to Ewing, NJ in 1985, first starting my own small plot in the backyard for a collection of young trees which are annually pruned to restrict their height and width. That plot is now a jungle every summer, and has a groundcover of vinca and ivy, a rock border (partially lined with hosta, maybe ill finish it eventually ;-) ), and a relatively good variety of small trees which were mainly planted but now include some self-seeded ones.

I also now maintain the rest of the garden areas around the house, most of which Ive planted with flowering bulbs (tulips and daffodils) for spring color and hostas (mainly green but also green-edge/white-center variety) for summer color. The hostas were all propagated from leaf crowns ripped out of the ground from mature hosta clumps, which were carefully replanted and watered continuously to ensure proper rooting. The bushes include northeastern conifer saplings which were transplanted 200 miles south, as well as more locally common junipers, rhododendrons, and azaleas. One other small garden in the back yard under the dining room windows also has some ferns, daylilies, and yellow flag.

Addendum:
Now I actually live 2,300 miles away in Elko, NV... but still tend the gardens when I go home!
