I'm retired and 5 years ago my husband and I built our house on a 1 1/3 acre of land that was just a paddock. We have 5 raised vegetable beds, and several fruit trees, but our main aim when planting our garden has been to put in plants that will attract the local birds. We have been very successful as over the past 5 years we have had 30 different species visit our garden. Some regular, others at only certain times of the year.
