I live in Provence -- terrestial paradise for humans, but living hell for all but the toughest plants. Limestone 'soil', scorching sun in summer, cold (down to minus 10C) in winter, drought, and the cold, fierce Mistral wind that blows ferociously for several days at a time: gardening is a challenge here!
Never taking the easy way out, I'm trying to plant things like gingers, which would look beautiful, if only they would sprout! Have managed to get caladaiums and canna lilies to grow, but who hasn't? I have a biggish plot of land (4,000 sq meters = roughly an acre). Half is pine trees, oaks and scrub; half is house, pool, large lawn and potential flower beds -- they still need a lot of work. The previous owners were NOT gardeners.
Am looking for low-maintenance AND beauty ANd toughnesss-- nothing more!
My biggest gardening sin: over-watering!

I live in: France

My zone is: southern France
