I live in an apartment house. Outside one of my windows is a space between mine and the next building. That space has become my garden. It's still very rudimentary. I started about three years ago with a few plants. My first and continuing problem is the wind that blows down from Alaska across the Pacific - it's cold and constant! The other problem is the mice! Last night I saw what I think may be a rat! I won't describe the remedies I am taking to banish these poor opportunists from my space. Then there are the pigeons, which were encouraged by a neighbour who is now dead. She refused to understand that I did not want or like these opportunists. Now she's gone I am left with the invasion, which seems to grow daily. Someone told me last week that I get some owl statues, because they would frighten the pigeons away. My dog doesn't even scare them, why would inanimate statues be effective, I ask myself. Nonetheless I will try it. I have nothing to lose, besides a few dollars.

The last time I gardened was in the UK. There it was cold and snowy in the Winter and wet and cloudy in the Summer! You really must garden to understand the place you live! I still can't get the watering right here. I still can't believe that I have a jade plant growing outside in that windy space. In the UK it was all I could do to keep an extremely small version of the same plant alive indoors! Last August I took my dusty ficus outside and it looks very happy, despite the wind! We live on an amazing planet! I am fortunate to live in a unique climate, I hope I can make my secret garden really beautiful. Its creation is helping me with patience and joy.
