I have been experimenting the past few years with growing temperate bamboos. The climate in this high-desert area is arid with cold winters (-10F) and hot summers (100F). None of the tropical bamboos can survive the winters and only a few of the temperate clumpers can handle the heat. So I am left with those pesky runners, which leaves me with few options on my small suburban plot. I have installed a barrier (3 x 40) to contain some of the large runners on the southwest side of the house. There is an easement (10) and an access road between my property and a protected wetlands where more large runners are planted. One clumper that I have is in a nice circular flower bed. So far so good. The problem I have is trying to incorporate smaller bamboos with other plants without the bamboo taking over the whole garden.

Current list of bamboos:
Arundinaria gigantea - planted in easement adjacent to wetlands
Bambusa oldhamii indoors, of course
Bashania fargesii - easement
Chimonobambusa quadrangularis - trying outside
Fargesia apircirubens centerpiece of a circular flowerbed
Fargesia robusta - side flower bed
Fargesia dracocephala rufa - side flower bed
Phyllostachys aureosulcata aureocaulis contained in 3 x 40 section
Phyllostachys bissetii - easement
Phyllostachys glauca easement
Phyllostachys mannii Decora contained with aureosulcata
Phyllostachys nuda contained with aureosulcata
Phyllostachys rubromarginata easement
Pleioblastus shibuyanus Tsuboi flower bed
Pleioblastus viridistriatus chrysophyllus - flower bed
Pseudosasa owatarii flower bed
Sasaella masamuneana albostriata flower bed
Semiarundinaria makinoi flower bed
Thamnocalamus tessellatus - front flower bed

Last years acquisitions Ph. aureosulcata, Ph. atrovaginata, Ph. glauca Yunzhu
