I garden in 50 half-barrels on an 8th floor roof deck.
Full sun all day, very windy, beautiful view of Toronto
skyline and Lake Ontario. There are now quite a few perennials which have wintered over in the barrels, and the latest \"experiment is working on plans to develop a \"GreenRoof\" for both the community garden space, and the north portion of the roof, inaccessible to members, with solar panels to heat water for the building.
Since everyone living in the building has access to the roof deck -- five picnic tables make it attractive for groups -- veggies don't last long, although I have outsmarted the pickers by planting an \"underground garden\" -- potatoes, onions, etc. Gardening is an important source of exercise and relaxation for me.
We also compost for our soil.
