I am an eclectic flower gardener who likes lots of color and diversity in my garden. Not everything will survive our winters here in the North Idaho panhandle, but I have learned to mulch heavily in late Autumn and have been surprised pleasantly by what does come back in the Spring. I mainly have perennials, but always like to fill in with my favorite annuals.
My favorite flowers are:
Snapdragons (all colors and heights)
Stocks (hard to grow, here)
Ornamental Sweet Peas
Foxgloves
Delphiniums, especially the Chinese kind or "butterfly delphiniums),
Lilies (Day lilies and Asian/Oriental lilies)
Lily of the Valley
Columbine and
Hollyhocks -- the ALL-TIME favorites!
and many, many others, too numerous to list.
I feed wild birds, and after a fishing trip, hubby gives me the leftover earthworms to release into the garden. Good for the soil and the robins.
We have clay soil, here, and over the last several years I have gradually gotten it into better condition by composting, mulching, etc. And fertilizing.
I prefer as much organic as possible. I kill weeds by digging them out. The most I will use of a chemical nature is a tiny bit of Round-Up Spot foam in the walkways between the beds, and Miracle-Gro in a hose sprayer (never together, though!)
My least favorite flowers are chrysanthimums, and such short-lived bulb flowers as Gladiolas. They're beautiful, but the tall ones always need staking, and they only bloom once and the flowers only last a very short time.
Up here, we have a deer problem, but I am gradually getting a handle on that.
