Just moved to the high desert in Ca a year ago. I'm trying very hard to un-create a cottage garden. Other than grass and a few shrubs the developer provided.. it was a blank canvas. Soil is heavy compacted clay I'm still working on. Site faces south and the summer heat is stifling. I have learned that growing plants from seeds have fared much better than potted plants I've purchased....guess if the seeds can sprout in this soil, they've conquered half the battle. Anxiously awaiting the day that the trees I've planted have grown enough to provide a bit of shade.
