Mid-Missouri-bred (born in Panama), I grew up with one garden-crazy grandpa and the other a life-long farmer converted to truck gardener. With my dad, we had a greenhouse and 2-3 acre truck garden from the time I was 10 till I moved to Mexico at age 21. I was always in charge of most of the greenhouse transplanting, grunt work in the vegetables and then landscaping at my folks' house.
My wife is Mexican. We lived 7 years in Guadalajara, without even a square inch of Garden. Daughter in tow, we moved back to St. Louis 4 years ago and just bought our first house last year (next door to where we rented). I had dabbled with composting at the house we were renting, but now I am going full-bore into my own garden. I have already related on some of the forums about the place we bought. The woman had planted yew bushes and rose of sharon haphazardly in the front side and back, plus two over-grown pine trees and a forsythia that created havoc in my wife's allergies each Spring. So armed with the greatest herbicide known to man (my trusty shovel), I cleared out all of that mess, including Yew bushes with 20 foot runners and rose of sharon tap roots going straight down to Hades. My daughter and I tilled everything up and re-shaped the entire backyard, I shredded all of the wood scrap and mulched with it this year and am looking forward to enjoying the fruits of my labor.
