I live on 20 more or less wooded acres in Clinton Corners, Dutchess County, with my husband and two female yellow Labrador Retrievers. Lots of birds, bats, and peepers. And deer. My husband put up 6'-high deer fence with a gate for the driveway around the 3 acres in which we have most of our plants, but we've found that 6' is not high enough! I use Liquid Fence on the hostas around the pond and the vegetable crops, but it's too expensive (and time-consuming) to use it on everything. I think this year we'll add another couple of feet to the top of the fence. This year I started the following seeds under lights/on heating pads: tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, morning glories, 4-o'clocks, and coleus. Later on, I'll start a lot of rudbeckia to use as edging between the woods and the lawn.
