Hi all... I live in a 2 bdrm apartment. I moved from a large home/yard about a year ago and I've never lost my garden fever. At the home I was a regular composter (from eggshells to bags of lawn clippings from my neighbors to bags of browns on street curbs). I had lots of success with caladiums, crepe myrtles, hostas, grasses (orn.), sweet pea climbing vine, annuals, and a weeping willow. Now, in an apartment, I experiment a lot with hydrophonics and ficus trees. Trying indoor container elephant ear and caladiums for the spring! I've all but given up on indoor composting (but I sure have tried). However, I've found that dead leaves from the bushes around my apt. complex shredded up make a great mulch, just as grass clippings do.
In the future I may begin working with bromeliads (my mother was always big on those). But for now, I have ficus questions and fish water questions. I would also like to work with climbing vines for my balcony (north facing) like clematis.
update 5/5/03 - I brought home a sickly bromeliad and gave it a heavy treatment. It was "growing" in an old pot, got no light and rarely was watered. Its foliage was quite pale and I knew it had no chance of blooming. I emptied all the old dirt off, washed the plant and roots, then repotted it in scotts soil and added mulch. I gave it a light watering and filled its cups. Not sure this baby is gonna make it tho.
