My husband, Russell, and I have a bit of the country in Windsor Terrace (near Park Slope, but less fancy), Brooklyn, NY. Our small backyard garden grows pole beans, tomatoes, peppers (hot & sweet), broccoli, peas, herbs, greens and more. Russell grew 3 cantaloupes last year! This year's experiment is corn. We border the garden with strawberry plants. We share the bounty with everyone in our building by putting a basket of vegies in the foyer with a "take some, please!" sign. We pulled out tons of rocks and broken concrete our first year of gardening, but now we've got great soil and a small rock wall separating the plants from our tiny (3 by 15 ft.) patch of lawn.
