I started gardening out of necessity. The back of our home was covered in wild violets and has very sandy soil. It also has many trees with lots of shade. Soon after my two children outgrew the jungle gym, I decided to do something with the grassless, shaded area. First, I started with enriching the soil, taking down some trees, and starting in a small corner with some shade loving plants. Now, I can't stop and have the entire back yard with everything from shade plants to some sun ones. When in doubt, I have another tree taken down to let in some more light. I would have to say that the area is still mostly shade. My husband surprised me by having a small pond put in last year. It has turned from a wasteland to a place of retreat. I just wish our Summers were longer. It is true--I am happiest in the garden.
