I live in the far southeastern corner of New Mexico, where growing things can be a real challenge: Caliche soil; very windy springs, and hot, dry summers. My particular challenges are even greater, because my husband & I bought a former commercial building on a busy highway and are remodeling it (while we live in it...groan...). The "yard" was asphalt and gravel over packed fill. After an investment of much blood, sweat and tears--since there's no money to speak of--we almost have it enclosed with privacy fence and leveled, with 28 trees, and many shrubs, roses and perennials. It will be years before it looks like a REAL yard, but it is definitely a labor of love! Between us my husband and I have 11 children--all grown and gone--and 13 grandkids. The closest ones are 4 hours away. Wish they all lived closer, so I could play with the babies while the big boys hauled rocks and rototilled!!
