My garden is my favorite place to be. I share it with my husband, 4 dogs,14 cats, fish and birds and a peacock, Mr Jones. We have about 2 1/2 acres. We have every soil type known to man but mostly clay. I have been at this for 3 years and am constantly working to improve our soil. Have even added a load of elephant poop.
We have both male and female rocks so have a new supply constantly:0) I have never dug a planting hole that I didn't have to dig a rock out of first. A lot of our planting areas are decided by whether the rock is too big to move or not. Our path ways wind around rocks or stumps that we just don't have the energy to move-one of us will say \"don't you think a ______ would look good here beside this rock\" or \"what kind of clematis do you want to plant to grow up this stump?\"
I am more a planter than a gardener. I love to plant. Our garden is no certain style-we have country gardens, woodland gardens and just flower beds. DH was going to redo part of the grassy area of our yard and in the middle of the plan we decided it would be more fun to watch strawberries grow than watch grass grow so right in the middle of the back yard is a big strawberry patch. We garden for our pleasure. I'm \"serious\" about gardening but I do fun gardening-it doesn't have to be perfect-just fun.
My husband and I are 'granny' and 'grandpa' to Wally & Marty. Kittens we found dumped at the local Wal Mart on the 4th of July and since made 'famous' by Hoehum's Twas the Night Before Solstice (or at least in Marty's mind she's famous).
All the cats entertain us when we are in the garden and they are so much help as I'm sure all of you who have similar helpers know.
The dogs can be a bit of a problem when it gets hot and those cool flower beds are calling to them. Fortunately, we live out in the country so it doesn't offend anyone if we run chicken wire fences temporaily to save the dogs lives.
Hopefully, our garden will never be finished.
