My family comes from a long line of midwestern farmers, but living in town we must adapt to a smaller scale. We have a large vegetable garden, grapes, herbs, and apples. I'm a beginner at composting, but have been impressed with the results so far. We're lucky to live near a friend who keeps chickens and goats and find their manure to be a great addition to the compost. We also have roses and are learning to care for them under desert conditions where you cut back on fertilizer during the summer rather than increase it! I LOVE gardening year round with our mild climate! My Dad calls gardening "organic exercise"!
