Last year I bought a house I couldn't afford (I rent in NYC). The house is almost 300 years old on a acre of mature neglected gardens, mostly hosta, lily of the valley, ferns, peonies, rose of sharon and heirloom iris. A lot of shade trees. Woods in the back and bordered by a stream. Also ferns, violets, wild strawberries, a few skunk cabbages and trillium and a whole sloping lawn of trout lilies, some of which bloomed last spring.
I can't move in till next fall so I have to rent it out.
I do tend a friend's garden upstate but the selection is limited by the deer and my every-other-weekend schedule (my friend doesn't garden and is a weekender herself).
While I wait and dream of my house I'm trying to educate myself about growing and locating native species. Also, moss and old roses. I'm also interested in container gardening and buy old planters at auctions when I can. (Again, limited by friend's disinterest in watering them when I'm not there.) My house plants are mostly orchids, all purchased cheaply at shows, sales and K-Mart.
I only discovered this site this snowy morning, and look forward to being part of the forum.
