Welcome to compostmonkey's Member Page
I'm cultivating native perennials and shrubs from seed, and leaving only enough lawn to have a broad path around the yard. I practice organic methods, and have been putting kitchen scraps and mushroom compost (from the local mushroom farm)for only two years, and have converted sandy soil to rich black loam.
My vegetable garden supplies a very active kitchen. I focus mainly on heirloom tomatoes, a great variety of peppers (both hot and sweet), and a nice selection of lettuces.
I like to fill out plantings for the summer, and grow a wide variety of annuals, the easy ones like marigolds, zinnias (Persian Carpet is underappreciated)and alyssum for the smell of honey. Big, tropical plants fill the background (active member of the Canna-Banana Design School) with gladiolus to fill in the spaces. Gladiolus callianthus is a narrow-leaved variety that is elegant with a clean elegant fragrance in the evening.
