My husband and I live in Central Virginia on 4 1/2 acres of land which is mostly wooded. We have 4 cats.
I love heirloom flowers, and grow a few veggies. I try to be a strictly organic gardener but have resorted to using a little Round-Up to help control japanese honeysuckle in my woods.
I got into Old English Game bantam chickens (I have had bb reds, crele, golden sebright, and brassy back varieties) by accident a few years ago when a neighbor's rooster & hen ran away from home & started living in our yard (roosting in an oak tree). I built them a coop & now have 2 roosters & an ever-dwindling hen population (they only free range when I'm home but I've still lost quite a few to hawks and nesting misadventures -- they get broody, hide their eggs outside the safety of the coop, and get killed by predators).
But I'm best known for my composting efforts. I work at a large publishing company as an editor & every week I take home 50+ pounds of coffee grounds & whatever else folks toss into the compost buckets at the coffee convenience centers at the office. I also drag home bags of leaves in the fall from the city streets. You just can't ever have too much compost!
