I have a wrap-around balcony garden that faces south and west. The south exposure gets about eight hours of sun. The west exposure gets about five hours of sun from May through late July, split between 1 and 3:30 PM, and again from around 6 to 8:30 PM. The south balcony faces a asphalt parking lot, so it gets hot. I've meausred temps as high as 110 degrees F. on the wooden decking.
I've had success with all petunias, (including heirlooms), marigolds, nasturtiums, assorted zinnias, heirloom tomatoes, morning glories, black-eyed susan vine, dwarf sunflowers, wax begonias, snapdragons, impatiens, scarlet runner beans, coleus, geraniums, gazania, cosmos, vinca, and several more that I can't recall just now. In short, if it's an annual that'll take heat, I'll try it.
