Have been growing tropical plants in the desert for over 20 years. I have an 1/2 acre rainforest garden with palms, tropical fruits and even orchids. Even have a few tropical timber trees examples are Tectona grandis TEAK, and Swietenia macrophylla Amazon mahogany tree. Also grow flowering trees that they can't grow on the cool California coast, examples are Delonix regia/royal poinciana, Colvillea racemosa/ colville's glory, Cassia fistula & grandis.......

I also have a garden in a small town call Parks, which is about 17 miles west of Flagstaff at 6,950' in elevation. Here the winter are cold and the summer cool, rainfall ave about 21" a year.. Its a town in the forest, with ponderosa pines, gambel oaks and aspens....Its is a zone 6 area and over the last 6 years of record keeping my ave yearly low is -6 F and so far the lowest has been - 8 F, the growing season has ave about 115 days... In my garden I have fruit trees, apples, plums and cherries...

Many gardners try growing varities of fruit trees that are not suited to the short growing season like "delicious" and "granny smith" apples and "bing" cherries... I grow hardy fruit trees that were develop in Canada, Minn, and North Dakota and have been gotten good fruit production..

I like being able to have a garden in both these locations, its like living in Vermont and Florida but each garden is only 140 miles apart......

I live in: United States

My zone is: 9b-10a AZ usa
