My garden style is eclectic but leans toward an Asian aesthetic. I have bamboo, ornamental grasses, assorted perennials and shrubs, a small moss bed, and several small water features. Note the word "small" is used frequently!

On a small urban lot, I manage to squeeze in a (very)small vegetable garden, a shade garden and a barn full of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. All this in a small city. I guess it's not how much space you have, but how efficiently you use it. :)

Raising bamboo as ornamentals is a hobby and interest I have pursued since 1997. I now have around 35 varieties of bamboo in my gardens and experimental beds. There are cold-hardy bamboos for the garden and tropical/subtropical kinds that I am growing as houseplants.

My hobby also turned into a part-time career in garden design, specializing in small gardens (such as courtyards and balconies), containers and window boxes. Bamboo and their companion plants, including ornamental grasses, play a big role in many of my designs. A college education that included horticulture, plant/soil science and landscape design was the foundation, but passion for plants and design aesthetics are the motivation.

A lot of the inspiration and courage I muster to try new things from all of the great information, suggestions and advice from people right here on GardenWeb. Thanks, everyone (and Spike, for making it possible)!
