My wife and I live in the cold (except in the summer, when it gets to 90-100 degrees) north country of Minneapolis, MN.

Our backyard pond is a 200-gallon, professionally installed, concrete type with a three-tier waterfall. It has been designed to look very natural. The 1/6 hp Little Giant pump creates a strongly flowing, very natural-looking waterfall coming out of some dogwood trees and almost makes you think youre in the woods next to a mountain stream (until a jet airliner flies over--were near the metro airport).
Ive refined the pond over several years so that now the fresh water coming into the pond runs through a filter and is regulated by a float valve. There also is a timer to turn the pond off at night and back on in the morning.
During the summer of 02, I installed a submersible UV filter and mechanical filter to keep the algae under control. That plus barley pads for the string algae has kept the pond crystal clear.
We keep fish in the pond and winter them in an indoor aquarium. They started as small feeders, but some are in their third or fourth season and getting quite large. Ive experimented with tadpoles, and the frogs tend to stick around, partly, I think, because of the thick crop of water hyacinths they like to hide in.
Our water plants include water hyacinths, four-leaf clovers, water cabbage, and floating hearts.
I can see how keeping a pond can become an avocation and addiction--a great hobby!
