Left Santa Fe where I grew up and moved to Petoskey, MI nearly 10 years ago. We (wife and 2 kids aged 14 and 9) live in a nice spot overlooking the bay with a 1/2 acre of sloped sandy loamy soil "protecting" my view. I've got several dozen species of edible trees and shrubs with an emphasis on apples. My favorite tree is either the huge Northern Spy or the Trancendant Crab. Permaculture to me means keeping a small flock of bantam hens under the big tree to keep curculio at bay...at least untill I decide to get out the sprayer and "Nuke" the whole thing with Imidan. I have good sized sea buckthorn and hazelnut hedges to blunt the visual effect of an 8 foot deer fence. This weekend (early October) I'll finish picking the cornelian cherries (for cordial/syrup), the beach plums (for jelly and out of hand), and pick a few early spys for apple crisp (or maybe apples and sausage). LIfe is good in a place where you only have to water weekly during the hot months IF it doesnt rain and where the land seems to give so graciously to it's stewards...unlike my old home state where the "carrying capacity" was exceeded decades ago and no one seems to care.
