I'm a graduate student in molecular biology - specializing in the bio of cancer. I have a large(for my part of the world, small for everywhere else) sized yard which comprised of clay and shrubs when we moved in 3 years ago. Clay has been beaten w/ homemade compost (2 earth machines) and shrubs have been largely replaced by fruit trees, herbs, roses and veggies. DH and I are also totally into tropical plants for our patio. I'm trying really hard to turn the whole family into compost wackos, but so far it's just me.
