While growing up in Northeast Alabama, my parents had huge vegetable gardens in which my siblings and I worked. I didn’t know just how much it meant to me until as an adult, I didn’t have the chores of digging, hoeing, planting, carting water, harvesting, snapping, shelling, slicing, canning and freezing. I would actually visit my parents during the summer months just to get to dig in the dirt again!
I’ve always had potted plants and flowers and working with them was cathartic, but when my family and I moved to the NW GA area four years ago I inherited a vegetable garden plot and a huge yard full of azaleas, hydrangea, and all sorts of flowering bulbs and shrubs. I have been ecstatic over "getting" to do all those childhood "chores" again!
Sometimes its best to get back to your "roots." (Yes, the pun was intentional!)
