I'm a wife, mom, architect, cook, sewer and gardener. I started gardening when I bought my first house from my husband's boss! He took me into his garden and lovingly described each plant, its care, bloom time, light requirements, etc. I knew I better take good care as he was sure to visit! It was a tiny rowhouse garden 15 feet by 50 feet. When we bought our second (and current) house we had a lot of work to do inside and out. It was 72 years old with the orginal owner still living there. She had survived her mother, father and stepmother, but had been in declining health for years. The garden was a shambles - mainly ivy, out of control shrubs and mature trees with branches down to the ground. I brought small specimens of nearly everything from my rowhouse garden and plopped them in the ground and did nothing with them for a year. The second spring in the house I pulled ivy while my 2 year old napped for weeks. I moved everything into my new bed. Now eight years later I have 7 beds and a small vegetable garden. My original bed becomes shadier each year so I'm learning about shade gardens by necessity!
