I live in Prescott, AZ. I moved here 10 years ago from Southern CA, a gardeners paradise, to shall we say a gardeners hell! Don't get me wrong, I love it here, but gardening has proven to be quite challenging. It is 5200 feet elevation here, so we don't have the desert temperatures like Phoenix, but we have soils ranging from heavy clay to rock/caliche combination, and little in between. Add to that strong spring winds which last typically from mid April to July, dry air, high elevation sun issues, temperatures over 90 degrees in June and July, yet hard frosts can still occur as late as June 6th and as early as October 10th, and let's not forgot the critters..., gophers, javalina, mule deer, porcupines, pack rats... need I say more? In spite of it all, I have become a very knowledgeable and successful gardener. I truly enjoy designing landscapes, as it incorporates all of the practical knowledge and skills I have painstakingly acquired, and my favorite place to hang out for long periods of time is my local nursery, where everyone knows me by name, and the manager gives me special discounts. No doubt that gardening and landscape design are my favorite hobbies. I also enjoy meteorology, and Northern Arizona is a terrific place for weather observation. I find it fascinating to assess weather conditions and how they impact gardening. My newest endeavor is to grow vegetables, especially tomatoes. This will be my first year. I am looking forward to lots of suggestions and advice from all of you! Thanks, and wish me luck!
