I've been living in New Brunswick, NJ since July 2012, and am putting together a garden here at my new place to keep my sanity when I start grad school for clinical psychology. Before that, I was in Buffalo, NY for three years (getting a new bachelor's degree), and am originally from Long Island, NY. My last garden was back in Franklin Square. I share my home with Sammy, my DYH amazon parrot, who was hatched in 1991 but didn't come into my life until 1998.

Most of the roses below are to form the "bones" of my garden, with the exception of my collection of very fragrant dark-red or crimson Hybrid Teas, which will be the "thrillers" in large mixed pots to be placed on paved and decked areas of my yard. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
My potting medium for starting the bands was equal parts (by volume) of peat moss, Bovung dehydrated manure plus humus, and shredded hardwood mulch (all from Home Depot), mixed in batches in a wheelbarrow as I went along. Each pot had the bottom inside lined with newspaper to keep the soil in but still allow water to drain through. A little of the potting mix was added to cover the newspaper, then the rose was placed to be about 2" deeper in its new pot than it was in its original band liner. As I added potting mix, I sprinkled Jobe's Organics Knock Out Rose Food in layers throughout the pots (1/2 cup for 1-gallons, 1 cup for 2-gallons). When fully potted, each rose was then soaked using 1 tablespoon fish/seaweed emulsion per gallon of water, and set out to receive full-sun from about 9-10am until 5-6pm. Due to the very wet Spring I've been having here in NJ, I haven't had to water any since the initial soaking. The first bands arrived in mid-April, with further orders coming through May. I took individual pictures of (almost) all of them after being potted, so I can accurately gauge their growth. The pictures are in a Facebook album -- if you want to see them, message me. For my pot-pet collection of fragrant crimson or dark-red Hybrid Teas, my potting mix differed because these roses would be remaining in containers and not planted into the ground, and so I wanted a lighter mix. I used 6 parts peat moss, 2 parts Bovung, 2 parts leftover shredded composted mulch (from www.njmulch.com), 1 part vermiculite and 1 part perlite, with Jobe's Organics Knock Out Rose Food mixed in. Larger HTs went into 22 1/2 inch resin barrel planters (from Home Depot for $20 each), while smaller ones went into 15" plastic pots.
