We are in Northern California zone9. Our summers get over 100 degrees and everything dies in my tiny garden. I am in the process of ripping out everything that was left by the old homeowners and replacing it with what I want. It will be a long time before I actually get to do some planting. I plan to have a grass free yard filled with flowers and edibles. We have two little helpers in the garden. Our pup digs out rocks for us and eats any stray sticks and our kitty scares the birdies away with her pretty voice.
