There was a time ten years ago when we built a new house in NY and I had so much trouble with my back that I was unable to garden at all. I began to regain some agility when we moved to Vermont, but of course, if you blinked, you d miss the growing season! And don t ever try to plant anything until the ground begins to thaw in May! Since moving to SC more than five years ago, I m now able to dabble in the dirt for several hours at a time, and I m surprised how much I enjoy it, aching knees, sweaty hair, clay-caked jeans and all. I took the master gardening course in Greenville, SC, a few years ago--now at least I know what I m doing wrong and why my plants die! I adore roses and lilies and have learned a great deal from the generous advice of forum members--I ve been printing out particularly informative threads for some time now and keep them filed in my rose notebook for useful reference. I especially value the forum s advice because I can find out what works in the Southeast, rather than relying on a book published in New York or England in a climate unlike the steamy South.
