2010 is my first year gardening. Many things did famously, other things, I will rethink for the future.
We never really had a garden growing up. I think it’s because my mother did a lot of farm-type work as a child and wanted to remain as far away from it as possible. I grew up in Michigan, lived in LA for 12 years including college, and have been in western PA for about 8 years now. We are leading a simpler life, and I’m thrilled that my trash has been reduced by over half since I started composting a year ago... It’s not that we had a lot to begin with, it’s just the two of us, any the bird ... still in suburbia, though, so I wrestle with cultivating the whole backyard with edibles and scaring the neighbors. I’ll plant some flowers this next year and make everyone happy ;)
My attention tends to roam. I find hobbies that last until I get pretty good at them, and then the next "bright shiny" has me. Former (and current) activities include leatherworking, bread baking, cross stitch, sewing ... cooking, but I still do that often (daily?) ... the others come and go depending on my mood or the season, such as, bread baking waned during the 90+ degree days of august, but now that cooler weather seems to be starting, I am less inclined to be slaving away outside and I’m interested in making leather projects again.
There is no fear that gardening will wane anytime soon. I’m not nearly "good at it" yet :P ... And I have the bug. It’s pretty cool that you can mix some seeds with soil, water, and sunlight, and POOF ... there’s food!
Thanks to everyone on gardenweb for your help, andvice, and kindness. This has been my go-to source all season. I look forward to making many friends. :)
