HAVE: Salvia 'Hot Lips' & Salvia chamaedryoides
Comments (5)Wow Mikey, When you say well rooted , you mean well rooted(they were small shrubs!). I only hope I can send you enough to make you equally pleased with the exchange. Today is my birthday & it was a great one. I must say the chamedroides was about 4x the size of a certain well known mail order nursery at which I paid $11 for a plant that didn't overwinter. They are eternal optimists with their zones. I told Ginny Hunt that I really appreciated her more conservative numbers. I'd rather bring it in than lose my investment! Yes at $11 plus shipping, it could be considered an investment, lol. I really liked the way you used tape & closing the box to keep the plants from sliding around, were you an engineer before you retired? Thank you again & again ! You made my day! Comments (15)Voodoobrew, this is the strangest Salvia. I am now getting the same kind of blooms you mention....a mix of all white, white with just a tiny spot of red on the lip, red, bicolor, what next? Maybe it will have stripes. It certainly is not consistent, is it? I am wondering if it is a seedling variation? I know it is supposed to sport some solid red and solid white when the weather heats up, but while this is interesting to say the least, it is certainly not what I expected. Comments (6)I have three plants, one had a few white with light pink lips, the second had a few red flowers and refuses to bloom, the third a mature plant I got from a LA nursery with flowers of red and white. Sometimes a branch would have all red flowers, another brach would be white flowers. I watched a hummingbird go to every single flower several days in a row yet not one single seed formed. I guess the bumble bees got to it first....See MoreMy savlia Greggi red turned out to be Hot Lips...
Comments (5)I have had 'Hot Lips' in my garden going on 5 years. It has developed into a sizable shrub about 4 feet across and nearly as tall although I do prune it back pretty hard each spring. I do live in a relatively mild beachside climate but we are exposed to the occasional Arctic blast once or twice each winter. It hit the low 20's for a few days last November with no ill effect on the salvia. Hot Lips starts out with pure red flowers, so easy to see how the OP was misled. Then the bicolor flowers appear for most of the summer, becoming pure white flowers in late season. The hummingbirds don't seem to care what color the flowers are - they continue to visit it daily until it stops flowering in late October....See Moreforever_a_newbie_VA8
