Oxalis pes-caprae, aka Bermuda buttercup
Comments (1)"It is now reported as invading native coastal dunes in northern California. Due to its extensive occurrence in lawns and gardens, O. pes-caprae has the potential to rapidly spread via the production of bulblets and contaminated soils into adjacent natural areas in California and elsewhere." What more of a reason do you need not to encourage it?...See Moreany difference between buttercup squash and burgess buttercup?
Comments (1)The old Burgess Buutercup is usually a fair performer, good vine with decent yield. Very susceptible to SVB tho. Lots of vendors just sell a generic buttercup now. Unless the grower has been careful and selective, The burgess can lose a lot of it qualities. The Japanese Kabocha s are in the same group, so you might want to try one of those. Here is a link that might be useful: buttercup...See MoreWhat is this on Maui Buttercups scape?
Comments (6)"Fasciated" is not correct here. I call this "hyperfoliated" (with "foliated" being the key term, meaning "with leaves"). Fasciated is what broccoli raab does, with the stems fused together. You can see a truly fasciated scape at www.delvalhosta.org/hosta-lingo. The cause for these hyperfoliated growths is unknown, but could be due to some hormonal imbalance. It's most often seen in juiced-up nursery-grown plants, and seems particularly common in the Maui Buttercups family (see Rainforest Sunrise). And no, this will not root. Hostas require crown tissue to reproduce. David...See MoreWhat is happening to my Maui Buttercups?
Comments (10)arcy ——Well, in terms of tree roots, I do have a couple other hosta maybe under sized in that same bed. The mouse ears in the picture is new this year. my Fire Island seems under sized. But, Sum & Substance, So Sweet, Royal Standard and Undulata are all on track. peren, I never had Iris in this bed, just those awful invasive orange day lilies. It took two years of digging and covering the ground to kill what was there so I could plant there. ken, yikes is right! Not only is the Maple there, but maybe 8-10 years ago the was another tree not that far from the Maple that died (wonder why, ha!) and I imagine there are dead roots in the ground too. I will have to look for that piece with the little root. It’s out in a bucket or bag with yard waste....... bkay, so the root rot you’ve seen is different from what you see in my pics...... beverly, the way it was initially connected reminds me of Huecheras. The plant seems to develop this long rhizome-like piece that the plant grows from. debra...See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
