Staining red oak cabinet trim to match white oak.
Comments (2)yeah, i don't think you can make red oak look like white oak. i have several french antique pieces in european red oak. it is very dark, and i love it. i bought some antique chairs recently to go with a red oak table. i thought they were dark too, but they are in white oak. i believe that i can make the white oak chairs darker, but vise versa is another story. i would definitely make him redo those cabs in the wood that you chose. he should not have changed that without your permission. i hate it when i pay someone for a product/service and they just take it upon themselves to do what they want to do. my poolbuilder moved my pool about a foot and a half without telling me. i noticed it was not lined up with a planter after it was built and he admitted that he had done this. i guess its too late to make him fill that pool in and re-dig another one a foot and a half over. but, i would consider cabinets a different story. make him do it over....See MoreWhite Stain on Unfinished Oak Cabinets
Comments (20)If the painters are done, I will go shoot a photo or two of our 1970's stained cabinets tomorrow. Since we redid the counters, actual granite, we had the painters take them down to wood (sealed unfortunately) restained and fresh finish. They actually look pretty good for apartments. In my own place I have always preferred white cabinets. For tenants, I want what will clean or hide their sins. At this property I have 48 units, 88 bathrooms, 120 bedrooms to deal with, plus the rental houses and thankfully no more frat house. And 20 years experience. Seal in the interiors of the cabinets too, especially the drawers. Stainless steel Top mount sinks, (moen faucets) in the bathrooms, order the all wood cabinets and buy a top you can top mount a replacement sink (moen single handle faucet) Check out HDsupplysolutions...See MoreWhat color stain on White Oak floors in Kitchen?

Comments (2)Yes, you need to remove the finish coat (which is probably polyurethane) before you can stain them another color. This will probably remove some of the color of the stain depending how the cabinet was stained and what it was stained with and how you remove it. You have a couple options to remove the finish. 1) You can use a chemical stripper like Citristrip. 2) You can sand the doors by hand (Don't use a power sander of any kind! You're not trying to take of six layers of paint or remove any of the wood.) 3) You may be able to take the doors and drawer fronts to be dipped. A company will soak them in a vat of chemical stripper. It's expensive, but can be worth it for pieces with lots of edges, nooks and crannies that will hold up to it. Then you use a chemical stripper on the frame. For that vanity, #1 is absolutely your best choice. #2 is also reasonable. #3 isn't worth it for something with such straight lines. If you're trying to get the color out, too, that's a whole additional process. If not, and you just want them darker, you can stain them. Doing something like this yourself isn't "hard," but it does take skill and practice. Getting them an exact color is very challenging and you have no test pieces. It also involves a lot of labor and time. You can hire a furniture re-finisher to do it for you. But they are not going to guarantee you an exact color. If you're very particular about the color you want, it still might turn out greyer or redder or something you don't want....See More- 28 days ago
