Help convert family room to formal living room!
Comments (5)Well -- start by clearing the room completely -- that move alone can really help you see the whole space in a new light or form! Also: what items do you currently have to furnish it? What do you need? How about painting the room? I like the rug -- and the shelves. Clear the shelves -- and simply add some books -- and modern clean-lined glass or silver/plate items -- like bowls. For a modern touch -- add a gallery of black-and-white photos -- mat alike and frame alike too. If you plan to keep the TV in the room -- then consider angling the unit into the corner at the left-hand side of the far window. Then step back and really look at the space -- would a sofa work against the wall where the computer desk now sits? Then add a couple of armchairs and an ottoman/long coffee table. Lots of lamps too. Maybe roman blinds at the windows....See MoreNeed help with formal living room off of dining room
Comments (15)Candid! The first thing I saw in both rooms were the window treatments. The living room valances, although formal in design, are a dated look even for kitchens. The dining room drapes and swag should be framing the stage in a theater; they're just too heavy and dark. The red art in the dining room and the blue art in the living room are "off" elements in contrast to you furniture. The red ones might work in your kitchen, and the blue could theme another space. Dried floral arrangements and sticks as decor faded a long time ago. The living room rug should be as large as the one in the dining room. What to do... Here's a favorite house of mine and you have the furniture to pull off a similar look if you just simplify and get a larger rug and some side tables and a coffee table that are in scale with your other pieces. Click through the link with the photo to see other rooms in this lovely home. Brighten up your space by painting both rooms as below (believed to be Navajo White walls and White Dove Trim.) Consider wainscot for the dining room and a new chandelier. Updated window treatments that match in both rooms, larger rugs and less clutter would improve things. If you do paint, then removing all the tchotkes will happen anyway. Pack them up and only put them back judiciously....See MoreMove formal dining room to formal living room.
Comments (11)My questions are: Do you use a dining room? For sit-down dinners, I mean. Do you use a living room? It's certainly thinkable to reconfigure these rooms. Serving and clearing up in a dining room that is farther from the kitchen is a little less convenient than when it's adjacent, although a full-grown butler's pantry could include a dishwasher and sink along with storage for the best china, flatware, and glassware (a very traditional layout in a large home). But if you don't use a dining room now, you probably won't in the future. And is your living room mainly for show (and receiving the pastor, etc.)? So many of us essentially live in our family rooms (which might be the den in your current layout) and only use the official living room for special occasions. Sometimes a family room that is open to the kitchen, plus a den for quiet and privacy, makes the most sense. If expanding the kitchen is the top priority and you don't actually use the living room, this could make sense. Or a living room-dining room combination might make sense. But please think carefully about how you actually live in your house....See More“Formal” Living room that nobody sits in
Comments (5)The lamp and side tables are not the problem, it looks completely unloved overall. Get rid of the clock and the small painting of people dancing. Get some bamboo or grass cloth roller or Roman shades to add texture . Move the curtain rods up to just beneath the crown. Add an oriental carpet if you can (I can’t tell how deep the pile is on the broadloom). Go to a box store for now and buy a big canvas- at least 42” square or bigger- for where you have the clock. Long term when the piano goes you need to put the two wingbacks together with a cute table between and get an accent chair- wood or leather....See Moresahmed0102
