would you ever purchase a house without an island kitchen?
Comments (39)For those of you who question why I would be so concerned about a lack of an island in a kitchen remodel, what else would YOU think is you read the following in a magazine..." islands are now almost universal in new construction and rennovations of kitchens." ? I agree with the statement, because there is no arguing that islands are the trend and are popular. But if you don't have the room in your space, you don't...And I stick to my opinion that overcrowding the kitchen with an island that doesn't fit and ruins the work flow will work against you rather than for you in resale. I understand your concern, but also, why worry about not having something you can't fit? Make the best of what you have and do what you can. There are enough headaches in selling a house than to worry about things you can't reasonably change. I feel for you, because I hate having a house to sell, but give yourself a break on this one. About some of the other statements...I would die using a table as work space. Too low for my back and I'm under 5'4, so not sure how that would work for everyone...and I don't want chairs in my way either....See MoreLarge kitchen island without seating
Comments (7)I'd be concerned about the ability to move furniture and other large items in and out of the bedroom if you have a built in island that is too close to the door. Consider the balance in the kitchen - will a large island look out of place as if you don't really have room for it, but you wanted it anyhow? Does it fill the space appropriately both visually as well as functionally? Personally we rarely sit at our island and when we move to downsize, depending on the size of the next kitchen, I might eliminate that extra seating area, but I still hope to have an island because I find them so functional....See MoreHeight for counter bar stools for kitchen island
Comments (4)Our stools are 25.5” high for a 36” to top counter & works fine Is comfortable for eating & reading. Ours have leather padded seats & also have backs. No arms- hate arms as just get in the way.I had read the Recommended space between seat & counter is 10” - 12”. I think range accounts for height of person. Swivels that can adjust height are probably the ideal but hard to find in a swivel stool with a back which we insist on because we sit at our Counter a lot. BTW we just had our counter cut from a 42” bar height down to 36” Counter height so we had your same dilemma. The local store we bought our new stools from let us bring one home for a sit test!...See MoreKitchen island stools
Comments (4)Really pretty combo of counter & cabs. I looked at that Sylvan stool - says 19” wide overall & legs flare out so that's at base. Maybe you want to look for stool with legs that are straight down in line with seat to prevent illusion of taking up so much space. I checked mine & lower diameter is 18.5" includes the metal bar encircling the legs which form a square with the metal foot rest outside the square. it's the foot rest which I really like having even on counter height stools. The outside leg to leg width is only 13.5" I also really like having a back rest but my seating side of bar is outside the kitchen - open & no cabs behind. Swivel is a must. It's so helpful if you can buy local so you can do a sit test before buying. We were able to bring one stool home to try out before buying all 4 counter stools. I tried on line ordering with the first bar height island stools we needed & returned three before finding one that we liked. Believe it or not, the best one & the winner in that race was from Costco! The counter height stools we have now are from a local store specializing in wood furniture pieces....See MoreMichele Kirschner
